Learning Problems: A New Approach
by Ron B. Minson, M.D.
Attention and learning difficulties, as well as emotional and behavioral problems, are frighteningly real for many families.
My own family is a case in point. My daughter, who had been developmentally delayed from birth, began to run into serious problems in the first grade. Through testing we discoverd that she had a learning problem.
We took her from therapist to therapist, to tutors and education specialists. Yet despite all our efforts she slid further behind - and farther away from us. The more we focused on her the more she felt she was being punished. She had become "different" in an ego-destroying way. Hostility, anger and depression became the norm. Eventually she lost her desire to live.
As a physican and psychiatrist, I realize the value of surgery, medications and psychotherapy. But I am also clearly aware of their limits.
Our success with learning and behavioral problems has been achieved by combining both traditional and alternative medical concepts. We call this combination of treatment approaches "complementary therapies" - because each supports and reinforces the other by creating a synergistic healing effect that neither approach could achieve alone.
But creating the best therapeutic program requires the most accurate diagnosis possible so we can match the most effective approach to the specific problem. This process involves careful screening and testing procedures. Once a definitive diagnosis is achieved we build an individualized listening program while simultaneously educating the individual and family.
My own family story does have a happy ending. We finally did find effective help and today my daughter is thriving. My goal became the creation of a facility that would provide those solutions. That goal became a reality in 1990 with the founding of The Center for InnerChange in Denver.
